Speculation the death of Michael Jackson

speculation the death of Michael Jackson

LOS ANGELES - One day after Michael Jackson's sudden death, speculation was already turning on Friday to what killed the 50-year-old "King of Pop" just weeks before his long-awaited series of comeback concerts.

A family attorney said on Friday he had been concerned that Jackson's use of prescription drugs for dancing-related injuries would eventually prove fatal and that the entertainer's inner circle had ignored his warnings.

Authorities have scheduled an autopsy for Friday. But they cautioned it could take weeks to determine a cause of death, which will likely have to wait for the return of toxicology tests. Those tests will determine if Jackson had any drugs, alcohol or prescription medications in his system.

Jackson, a former child star who became one of the best-selling pop artists of all time before a descending into a strange and reclusive lifestyle amid accusations of child molestation, died Thursday afternoon at a Los Angeles hospital. He had rushed to the hospital in full cardiac arrest after collapsing at his nearby rental home.

Jackson's passing was front page news around the world as airwaves filled with his greatest hits from "Thriller" to "Billie Jean" and social networking sites were bombarded with messages and tributes from fans and musicians.

"It's so sad and shocking," former Beatle Paul McCartney said. "I feel privileged to have hung out and worked with Michael. He was a massively talented boy man with a gentle soul. His music will be remembered forever."

Few details were known about the circumstances surrounding Jackson's death but he was reportedly unconscious and not breathing by the time he arrived at UCLA Medical Center. Doctors were unable to revive him.

His body was flown by helicopter from the hospital to the coroner's office late Thursday.

Lawyer Brian Oxman, a spokesman for the Jackson family, told CBS's "The Early Show" on Friday that he had been concerned about the prescription drugs that Jackson took due to injuries suffered while performing.

"I had warned everyone that I could warn and I told them that one day, Michael Jackson is going to wake up dead, which is a very odd way of putting it ...," Oxman said on Friday on CBS's "The Early Show. "I do not want to point fingers at anyone because I want to hear what the toxicology report says and the coroner says but the plain fact of the matter is that Michael Jackson had prescription drugs at his disposal at all times.

"The bottom line was that he was under the influence of prescription medications for most of the time and it was dangerous and I've sworn that it was dangerous and all the warnings went unheeded."

Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery Homicide division searched Jackson's home in the upscale Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles at the behest of Chief William Bratton. But they called the investigation an "every day" event.

TAINTED TALENT?

Jackson dominated the charts in the 1980s and is considered one of the most successful entertainers of the past century, with a lifetime sales tally estimated at 750 million records, 13 Grammy Awards and several seminal music videos to his name.

"Michael was and will remain one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived," said Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, Jackson's first label boss. "He was exceptional, artistic and original. He gave the world his heart and soul through his music."

Jackson's reputation as a singer and dancer was overshadowed in recent years by his increasingly abnormal appearance and bizarre lifestyle, which included his friendship with a chimp and a preference for the company of children.

He named his estate in the central California foothills Neverland Valley Ranch, in tribute to the J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan stories, and filled it with amusement park rides and a petting zoo.

Jackson was twice accused of molesting young boys and was charged in 2003 with child sexual abuse. He became even more reclusive following his 2005 acquittal and vowed he would never again live at Neverland.

Facing a battered reputation and mountain of debts The Wall Street Journal reported ran to $500 million, Jackson had spent the last two months rehearsing for the London concerts, including Wednesday night at the huge Staples Center arena, home to the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team.

Despite reports of Jackson's ill health, the promoters of the London shows, AEG Live, said in March Jackson passed a 4-1/2 hour physical examination with independent doctors.

"I can't stop crying over the sad news," Madonna said in a statement. "I have always admired Michael Jackson. The world has lost one of the greats but his music will live on forever."

Jackson was born on August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, the seventh of nine children and first performed with his brothers as a member of the Jackson 5.

His 1982 album "Thriller" yielded seven top-10 singles. The album sold 21 million copies in the United States and at least 27 million internationally.

The following year, he unveiled his signature "moonwalk" dance move, gliding across the stage and setting off an instant trend, while performing "Billie Jean" during an NBC special.

In 1994, Jackson married Elvis Presley's only child, Lisa Marie, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1996.

"I'm so very sad and confused with every emotion possible. ... This is such a massive loss on so many levels, words fail me," Presley said in statement.

Jackson married Debbie Rowe the same year and had two children, before splitting in 1999, and he later had another child with an unidentified surrogate mother.

He is survived by three children named Prince Michael I, Paris Michael and Prince Michael II, known for his brief public appearance when his father held him over the railing of a hotel balcony, causing widespread criticism.

How to Start an Indie Record Label

Online Music review placed an observative post today on How to Start an Indie Record Label

Here’s a quick excerpt

Do you love music and aspire to start your own independent record label? If so, there are several things to consider, and we’re going to lay them out simply. There are definite steps that need to be taken during the planning phase to ensure that your indie label is a success. You will need to consider the who, what, where, when, why and how of starting your label.

Who: It is not impossible for one person to start an indie label alone. In fact, it’s been done quite successfully. However, you need to take the time to decide if that is the route you want to take. Perhaps you are thinking of creating a partnership with someone who shares your passion. If that’s the case, take some time to figure out what roles each of you will play. Finally, you may decide to have various professionals and paraprofessionals involved. Plan how you will find and keep those people.

What: Spend some time determining exactly what it is that you would like to create. For example, one of the most important choices you will need to make regards the type of music you want to promote. While it may seem easier to just take whatever comes along that sounds good to you, it is in fact very important to choose a genre and stick with it. Your label will be taken more seriously, and you won’t split your focus.

Grunge is dead. Long live grunge! New grunge book release will mark 15th anniversary of Cobain’s suicide.

Fifteen years after Kurt Cobain’s suicide on April 5th, 1994, comes the authoritative story of grunge. Grunge is Dead: The Oral History of Seattle Rock Music (April 2009, ECW Press) by Greg Prato is the definitive story of the Pacific Northwest music scene of the late '80s and early '90s.

Never before has a book attempted to examine the scene as a whole. Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament says, "Finally, a book about the early years of our little scene in Seattle. I can't wait to hear all the different perspectives from the people that were actually there, not the so-called experts, who didn't show up until the '90s."

Taking the form of an oral history, Prato’s hefty tome contains nearly 130 original interviews conducted for the book over a three-year period. No outside interviews are included and most of the interviews are published here for the first time. Some of these original interviews include:

Additionally, a large number of previously unpublished photographs appear in color and black and white throughout the book. The result is the complete first-hand history of grunge. Grunge Is Dead will allow rock fans to discover a unique chapter in music history, through the experiences of the people who were actually there.

Greg Prato is a Long Island, New York-based journalist whose writing has appearing in All Music Guide, Rolling Stone.com, Billboard.com, Classic Rock Magazine, and Record Collector Magazine. Lithium

I'm so happy 'cause today
I've found my friends ...
They're in my head
I'm so ugly, but that's okay, 'cause so are you ...
We've broken our mirrors
Sunday morning is everyday for all I care ...
And I'm not scared
Light my candles, in a daze
'Cause I've found god
Hey, hey hey (x6)

I'm so lonely, but that's okay, I shaved my head ...
And I'm not sad
And just maybe I'm to blame for all I've heard ...
But I'm not sure
I'm so excited, I can't wait to meet you there ...
But I don't care
I'm so horny, but that's okay ...
My will is good
Hey, hey hey (x6)

(x2)
I like it - I'm not gonna crack
I miss you - I'm not gonna crack
I love you - I'm not gonna crack
I killed you - I'm not gonna crack

I'm so happy 'cause today
I've found my friends ...
They're in my head
I'm so ugly, but that's okay, 'cause so are you ...
We've broken our mirrors
Sunday morning is everyday for all I care ...
And I'm not scared
Light my candles in a daze ...

STEPFORWARD

About STEPFORWARD

10 years and still kicking! First formed in 1995, makes STEPFORWARD one of the longest running hardcore band that ever come out of the city of Jakarta INDONESIA. They’ve been through several changes in their line up, the most recent line up is Jill (Vocals), Chainsawrick (Guitar), Junas (Bass), and Jar (Drums).

STEPFORWARD released their debut album titled “Stories of Undying Hope” in the year 2001. Their metal influenced hardcore style has won a lot of hearts during the years of playing live. The stage performance also simply energetic and tight, not to mention the brutal female vocal by Jill is captivating as some say. At the moment STEPFORWARD is in the process of releasing their sophomore album. “The new upcoming album is going to be heavier and more aggresive, yet melodic at the same time” said Chainsawrick the guitarist who also plays in the band SERINGAI. The musical influence on our new material varies from a wide choice of musical genre.

“From Smashing Pumpkins to Slayer, from My Bloody Valentine to Old Metallica” Ricky added. The songs’ breakdowns are going to be more significant, and the vocal is also going to be more “growl oriented” compared to the more “punk” style vocal on their first album. The song you hear on the MP3 player right now is titled “Saksi Imaji” and going to be the first single from the new album.

The next album is going to be released by PARAU their collectively owned music label who also has released successful other Indonesian independent acts such as SERINGAI, DOMESTIK DOKTRIN, and releases by hardcore group SPAZZ and LOS CRUDOS. “The year 2004 ended in sadness for Indonesia and the world,we hope 2005 is going to be better for everybody” said Jill.

Getah band

The History of A Rebirth
GETAH was formed in 1996, in Jakarta, Indonesia, over the ashes of Commotion Resources and Java Burn. Getah is one of the pioneers in the Indonesian crossover metal/goth/alternative rock scene. The early incarnation of Getah was heavily influenced by the likes of Jane's Addiction, Testament, Jimi Hendrix, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Motley Crue.

After several line-up changes and few demos, the band managed to score a major label records deal with Warner Music Indonesia. The self-titled debut album was recorded in Jakarta and mixed + mastered in San Francisco, USA. It was released in 1997 with lack of proper promotional efforts from the label.

The band, with Jodie Gondokusumo on vocals, Marcel Marcive on bass and backing vocals, Beoy Feisal on guitars and Tyo Nugros (replacing Reeve who left for USA right before the album was released) did several shows and had their first music video aired for the song "Api".

As the first Indonesian band who supported the Goth-Industrial look, Getah became famous in the underground circuit thanks to its on stage antics and fashion statement. The band's wild life style also became increasingly notorious among fellow musicians and fans.

Drugs abuse that spiraled out of control halted the band's progression and left the fans guessing on the band's ability to survive without killing each other. While still managed to write more materials and did some gigs here there, Getah was slowly entering the limbo.

Then came their first tragedy, Beoy Feisal, their eccentric and brilliant guitarist passed away in late 1998 while visiting a Halloween party in the city of Jogjakarta by himself. His death shocked the band and their friends. The band's additional keyboards player, Peter St. John, was bestowed the honor to fill in as Getah's lead guitarist. Shortly thereafter, Tyo Nugros, the drummer, left to join a famous pop-rock outfit Dewa 19.

With several additional drummers taking turns in handling the duty, Getah managed to record and release a 2-song EP "Green Wine" & "Missing" on cassette in 2001. Limitedly printed and circulated, the EP became a must-have for music collectors in Indonesia. Also in the same year, the song "Closing Chapter" was chosen as a soundtrack for the movie "Gerbang 13". During this period, Adra Dala, a dedicated jazz keyboardist, was abducted and forced to swear allegiance to Getah.

As if serving as a premonition, the song "Closing Chapter" became the last song Jodie Gondokusumo, ever released with Getah. He passed away in 2002 after a long drawn-out battle with his health problems. The band was never more devastated. All friends and many fans attended Jodie's funeral to pay a tribute to him. The rest of the band took a break to mourn and reflect.

With nobody to front the band, Marcel Marcive played double duty as the bassist and the new singer. A new permanent drummer, Agung Cakra Menggala, joined Getah and brought his own unique blues-influenced style to the band. Getah did several shows in Jogja, Bogor and Jakarta. The boys cleaned up their act. Drugs were abandoned for good.

In late 2005, a long time friend of the band, Oddie Octaviadi (frontman and singer of an Industrial metal band, Sic Mynded), went home to Indonesia after spending half of his life in the US. When a local promoter proposed Oddie to do a show in Indonesia with Sic Mynded, he instead offered the gig to Getah.

After a laughters-filled drinking session one night, it was decided mutually that Oddie will front Getah for that one show. The gig fell through but, the bond between Getah and their new singer was created strongly. It was the beginning of Getah's resurrection. The rebirth. The enlightenment through tragedies.

After doing several warm-up shows, the buzz started. Getah reborn. The Indonesian version of the Rolling Stone magazine was first to bring up the story. A three quarter-page length article tells a story of Getah to the old and new generations of Indonesian music lovers.

The band scrambled to restructure their management and musicianship as a gig after another came to their laps. Oddie, Marcel, Peter, & Agung started to write new materials, re-write old materials, record them and rehearse regularly at Peter's SoundX studio in Pondok Indah, Jakarta.

The new album is entitled "Release is Peace" was released in June 2008. It was 10 years in the making and it contains 11 songs that chronicle Getah's movement. "Release is Peace" pays tribute to Getah's friends/fans old and new. It is both an obituary of those who have passed away as well as a joyous celebration of those who are still living. The fans are awaiting in anticipation. They will not be disappointed. They will be hammered by its sheer bright heaviness and sweet slow darkness at the same time.

Discography:
- "Getah" (album, cassette, Warner Music Indonesia, 1996)
- "Green Wine / Missing" (single, cassette, self-released, 2001)

The Brandals

The Brandals

Formed in late 2001 as The Motives in urban polluted Jakarta, with Edo Wallad on vocal, Bayu on Lead guitar, Tonny on Rythm guitar, Doddy on Bass and Rully Annash on Drums. Spent most of 2002 rehearsing and performing their own materials, as well as classic Rock n’ Roll standards from The Who, The Stones, Hendrix, Kinks, some Pistols and The Clash. Early 2003, Edo left due to day job commitment as magazine editor. Enter Eka Annash (Rully's older brother), who intensified the whole song writing and performing activities, and changed the band's name to The Brandals.

Throughout 2003 The Brandals been thru fire and high water, performing their string of original materials such as 100 km/jam, Lingkar Labirin, Marching Menuju Maut, Moonlight Chid, etc. Recording process started on March to October 2003 in The Doors (East Jakarta) recording studio, which resulted in the released of their DIY debut album 'The Brandals'. The album, which distributed nation wide by a small indie label Sirkus Record, sold 7500 copies. It is an impressive number for an indie release. The Band continued their guerilla promo strategy, performed on underground gigs and uni/highschool music events. Promoting their album to various medias, and gain national highlight as one of the most notorious rock n roll band from the capital state of Indonesia, thanks to their lewd, provoking, disorderly act. Despite the disturbing image, The Brandals won critical approval from the medias and fans throughout the nation. Touring Java, Bali and Sumatera in 2004.

Recording for the second album commenced on November 2004 at Studio 18 Jakarta. 14 new materials were recorded under Flystation label. Gruelling working hours were paid off when the album's finished in May 2005. After few months of distribution search, the band hooked up with Warner Music for a distribution deal nation wide and presented what would be their best release yet, the eclectic 'Audio Imperialist', released on August 17th 2005. The album infused punk's ferocious attack, rockabilly's rhythm with country tinged rock n roll. Fuelled with lyrical contents that speaks urban life obsession on decadence, social injustice and rejected romance gone bad. Touring for Audio Imperialist from ‘05 to ‘06 proven to be another success for the band as they’ve exposed themselves to a bigger audience in bigger venues, included overseas tour to Singapore and Malaysia in early 2007. As the band gained more new fans, album sales rose up to dramatic numbers of 35.000 copies nation wide.

2007 saw the band back in the studio recorded their 3rd output ‘Brandalisme’. Trying to break the standard rock n’ roll platform, the new album became an experimental ground for the band to expanding their musical palette. ‘Brandalisme’ managed to dilute the new experiment sound of The Brandals with their rough and reverb trademark. The result was a refreshing and challenging new territory for the band as well for the fans. Still holds their DIY ethic flags high, ‘Brandalisme’ released by Aksara Records, another respected Jakarta’s independent label.
