Media Distorsi

About Media Distorsi

Media Distorsi was formed in Jakarta,Indonesia in the year 2001. Some people have thought that this is the reincarnation of FSOP and Liquid, which both are known as the mother of Media Distorsi. But actually Media Distorsi is completely fresh and brand new, and has a totally different point of view from the other two bands mentioned before.

Media Distorsi gives idealism, honesty, and also attitude, which are showed in the album Chapter01: The Beggining. And in the album, Media Distorsi does not only perform one specific genre of electronic music [drum n bass, trance, jungle, etc.] because they think by separating its genre can affect the process of creation in making the music. And so Media Distorsi has decided and chosen the word ELECTRONICA to describe their music.

Distorsi1 a.k.a Agus Sasongko [programmer and mixman] and Distorsi2 a.k.a Indra7 [guitars, synth, DJ, and vocoder] are the mainbrain and motor of the band. In live sessions, they are also helped by additional players Maria Claudine [vocals] and Tommy Hendrawan [bass]. But of some reasons, Tommy has resigned and has been placed by Jerry.

White Shoes And The Couples Company Band

White Shoes And The Couples Company Band
A SMALL BAND THAT INFLUENCED BY INDONESIAN MOVIES SOUNDTRACK FROM THE 70’S AND INSPIRED BY ACOUSTIC SPIRIT OF 1930'S CLASSIC JAZZ MUSICIANS. UPDATED WITH CLASSIC STRINGS ARRANGEMENTS, RETRO DISCO BEAT, EASY LISTENING ACOUSTIC BALLADS, AND SOME TUNES FROM VINTAGE KEYBOARD TOYS THAT MADE IN 1970’S.

White Shoes & The Couples Company ARE:
Miss Sari ..................... VOCAL, FINGER SNAPS
TMr. Rio ...................... ACCOUSTIC GUITAR, VOCAL
Mr. Saleh .................... ELECTRIC GUITAR, VOCAL
Mr. Ricky .................... KONTRA BASS, CELLO, BASS, VOCAL
Mrs. Mela ................... PIANO, VIOLA, KEYBOARDS, VOCAL
Mr. John ..................... DRUMS, VIBES

FORMED
In August 2002, in an art institute at Cikini, central Jakarta, two lover from the fine art faculty Rio & Sari decided to form a band together with their fellow in the faculty named Saleh. This was the first formation of White Shoes & The Couples Company, which features Sari in vocal & violin, Rio on rhythm guitar and Saleh on melody guitar. The three of them made their first debut in this formation in a college event. However, the trio formation diverged from their original plan where actually Sari and Rio had keenly asked a married couple from the music faculty to join the band the couples was Ricky Surya Virgana & Mela Virgana. Yet the couple was hard to meet since they were busy lecturing and covering for orchestras. Several months later, the couple join White Shoes & The Couples Company with Ricky on Bass and cello and Mela on viola, keyboards and piano.

SONGS
The first song of White Shoes & The Couples Company was “Runaway Song” written by Sari & Rio. The next one was “Windu & Defrina”, followed by “Sunday Memory Lane” and “Nothing To Fear”.

THE MANAGER
The Band’s acquaintance with it’s current manager Indra Ameng was another story. Indra Ameng was then already a well-known manager. Previously he was the manager of an old famous band in the 1990’s called Rumahsakit. Nevertheless, White Shoes & The Couples Company and Indra Ameng did not meet in the world of music, but the world of visual art. This was because Indra Ameng happened to be a visual artist and a program coordinator in an artist' initiative space in Jakarta, called ruangrupa.

THE DRUMMER
At the beginning, White Shoes & The Couples Company did not have a drummer. Thus, Ricky initiated to ask a friend at his faculty namely John Navid a.k.a Lau Kun Sin for position of additional drummer to play in one event at the BB's Bar. How ever, as the time goes by and according to necessities, John eventually became a permanent drummer in 2004. Thus, the final formation of White Shoes & The Couples Company was set up.

THE ALBUM
White Shoes & The Couples Company recorded their debut album comprising 11 songs under Aksara Records company. This Album, available in CD and cassette, was launched by Aksara Records on September 2005.

THANK YOU.

THE UPSTAIRS

THE UPSTAIRS

Jimi Multhazam (vocals)
Kubil Idris (guitar)
Beni Adhiantoro (drums)
Alfi Chaniago (bass & keyboards)
Elta Emanuella (keyboards & synths)
Dian Maryana (backing vocal)

Home-grown new wave rock group The Upstairs, have been doing just that - creating waves and in the process, proving that Indonesias underground music scene is alive and well.

The lead singer and driving force behind The Upstairs Jimi Multhazam is a charismatic cat. Hes been captivating audiences with his on-stage theatrics and electric energy, mimicking 70s punk rock legend Iggy Pop as he prances around the stage wearing white sunglasses and extra-tight black & white striped pants sporting a Mick Jagger hairdo.

Seeing the band kitted out in their chinos, spangly shirts and, pop art prints and white sneakers, you could hardly miss their retro credentials. Says Jimi, when the group was formed back in October 2001 we were heavily influenced by overseas bands like A Flock of Seagulls, Joy Division, and Depeche Mode, but we like to complement the synthesizers with heavy guitar lines.

The Upstairs beginnings were DIY in the truest sense. They produced and distributed their first EP, Antahberantah, in 2002 by themselves and simply through word of mouth and audiencde reaction it, sold like hot cakes. Known for their free form style of lyricism, eschewing rhyming, the band members include Kubil Idris (guitar), Beni (drums), Alfi Chaniago (bass & keyboard), Elta (keyboard & synths) and Dian (backing vocals). Looking at how the band came together, its clear that theyre not just a bunch of wannabes, copying big names acts like The Killers or Franz Ferdinand but genuine domestic pioneers with their own ideas. FYI, The Upstairs even had formed long before those two nu-wave international acts were born.

So why did they choose the new wave genre at a time when our local music chart is saturated with RnB and punk-rock? We did follow mainstream music at first and even played some rockabilly in our early days, Jimi explains. But we soon realized by the time we produced our album there would be thousands of bands out there doing the same thing Jimi goes on to explain that during their early experimental sessions he and Kubil, enjoyed fusing their music with synthesizers creating the weird sounds that would eventually lead to the bands current sound.

Jimi loves to imitate the James Brown shoe gazing move while wearing hilarious and outrageous outfits on stage. His tight ankle high jeans, striped shirt, scarf and white framed sunnies are the bands trademark. He says I was heavily inspired by the styles visible in the movie The Outsiders.

On Valentines Day in 2004 the band released their CD debut Matraman (also their second studio recording). At the launch party at the famous BBs Club Jakarta, 100 CDs sold out in just two hours. Their moment of glory finally came on the 19th September 2005 when they sealed a contract with Warner Music Indonesia and gave birth to their first major label album Energy with the lethal Disko Darurat (Emergency Disco) on its track list. Theres a certain symmetry to such a pioneering band supporting one of the men who made dance music what it is today. Thinking outside the box.

Sajama Cut

"Sajama Cut is part of the blossoming indie-music scene inhabited by bands such as The Brandals, Sore and The Upstairs. They cut 11 tracks for this impressive debut in January 2005 and the album's release has coincided with the growing popularity of local bands. The band's country sound in the debut album The Osaka Journals has little connection with the less-than-interesting mainstream music-scene in the country.

If only more local bands honed their songwriting craft to conceive a polished, radio-friendly songs, Peterpan and Dewa for example -- Sajama Cut's music has a wonderfully loose charm, out-of-tune vocals and undecipherable image-rich lyrics, mostly in English.

The band's signature is the warm sound of jangling guitar, reminiscent of Peter Buck's sound in R.E.M's early days. Another strong point is the eerie vocals of singer Marcel Thee, which are at times muffled deep in the mix. Aside from R.E.M, the band admitted that indie pop heroes Bright Eyes, The Fall and Guided By Voices were their biggest sources of inspiration. A combination of the two elements was best captured in the first single Fallen Japanese, which has a happy-sad melody that will not wear thin after repeated listens. Ornamented by lush choral harmonies from band members, the song is the album's crowning glory.

In the ocean of fake performers with rock-star attitude, Sajama Cut is a much-needed breath of fresh air"

Rocket Rockers

About ROCKET ROCKERS
It was all started in 1998. Our strongest line up are: Al Kautsar (vocal), Aska Pratama (guitar/vocal), Bisma Aria Nugraha (bass), Rizky Fadli (guitar), Khrisna a.k.a Ozom (Drums). First was our all time favorites; the 80s new wave acts; The Cure, Alphaville, OMD, Nena, Culture Club, Cyndi Lauper, Duran-Duran, The Police, Joy Division etc. Second were what in our CD player recently; Pulley, Lagwagon, Weezer, Pearl Jam, NOFX, Pennywise, Reggie & The Full Effects, etc. We have 8 compilations and 2 full albums, now were preparing for our 3rd album. Our first album Soundtrack For Your Life was putting out by Off The Records (an independent label from our hometownBandung) which has been sold more than 20.000 copies, and our 2nd album (Ras Bebas) now in major debut with Sony/BMG Indonesia and recently it was sold about 45.000 copies.

Weve been on skatepark tour all year with VOLCOM Indonesia, and play high school/college shows as many as possible. Weve also opened Skin Of Tears show (punk rock from Germany). Anyhow, we are sponsored by the greatest skate/surf companies ever, Volcom and Electric.

Actually it was like laying a big bet for playing punk rock music here and try to make a living out of it. Playing in a punk rock band or being a part of the (so-called) cutting edge is a super hard job. We have to try super hard to convince corporate people who have the money that we can add values to their business. Somehow, in the early days, the kids still feel strange to what we play. But we believe that we can pass this test and have a big smile in the end. Finally, after constant powering up grassroots activities, local TV, MTV Indonesia and radio are starting to recognize us and airplay our things. Thanks for the early believers.

Anyhow big promoters with big capitals finally tried to call off big rock shows, so many great bands had been rocking here (Indonesia) : Metallica, Green Day, Himsa, Sonic Youth, Beastie Boys, Sepultura, Foo Fighters, Ingrowing, Napalm Death, The (International) Noise Conspiracy, etc. Kids are starting to dig it and so our things can get more and more attention. Somehow, we dont care to what people going to say about us, even in the hard days. We just play to what we love and what we believe. It has been 8 years now, and we have never regret for our starting the band.

First thing first; we always write songs that come from our heart and try our best to describe us (as a band) in our original way. And we think its important to keep it simple so that more and more people can understand on what we stand for. We always try to consistently humble to all people: fans, corporate people, and media people. We always let them know that are trying to we speak their language and treat them as good as we want them to treat us. We need people to know that we always play music with honest and we dont do the regular rock star fuck you attitude (coz we have our own fuck you attitude way). We have fuck yous in a safe mode, just to let people know that we believe in our things.

Our recent goal was big, hairy and scary; we want to change the face of music industry in our country. Were trying to write down the path for newer bands that they can reach their dreams if they work for it. Its like providing an intellectual property so that new young creative bands with hard work attitude wont reinventing the wheel. We would like to see more kids start to wear band tshirt, start to skate and believe on their passion to live their own things. Its important to see kids which getting into more creative hype and do their best for their life and gives something back to their community. Thats what great American bands do for a living, and it inspires us so much.

70's Orgasm Club

About 70s Orgasm Club
..This profile was edited with Edit Your MySpace Ant (vox/guitar) is a die-hard Jimi Hendrix fan. When he heard Hendrix on his uncle's vinyl when he was 10, it really blew his mind. Hendrix is the reason he plays guitar and sings. Later he discovered that Hendrix's rock n roll its not just regular rock n' roll. There is a lot of black traditional music mixed in there, such as classic soul/funk and blues. That's why Ant decided to step on to a higher, wilder and deeper journey to the roots of Hendrix's rock n roll music. 60s soul/70s funk. He fell in love with soul and funk and that's why he asked Rio (bass) - whos crazy about The Jackson 5, Ben Folds Five and The Temptations - and Echo (drums) a man who loves 70s reggae. And so 70s Orgasm Club is born. A funky, bluesy, soulful, psychedelic Rock n' Roll is on!

Begin with these two brothers, Myo and Ducktoi who's responsible in forming MUCK in the middle of 1994. The band, first started as a side-project & now becoming a serious band after playing in lot of shows and gigs all over Malaysia since it formation. After 8 years being active in the Malaysian indie music scene with various changes of line-up, Kujoy has join in permanently on guitar. With Feroz on board (after the absent of Aie & Par) & officially filling the bass department. MUCK have evolved from a simple indie rock band to become more experimental with their music. Hence, MUCK have succeed in creating their own sound and style, and at the same time attracting more people becoming their followers due to their new, fresh & interesting sound.

For those of you who are unfamiliar and didn't have a chance to listen to MUCK before this, MUCK sounds can be describes as an experimental 80's american indie rock/lo-fi to noise pop. Among the bands that've inspired MUCK since the early days until now are SONIC YOUTH, DINOSAUR JR. , PAVEMENT & SEBADOH. All the bands that have been mentioned above have helped MUCK musically in creating and finding their own sound. Since then, MUCK is recognized by a lot of people as a unique band because of their own identity, originality & style in the music scene.

Superman Is Dead

SID

SID, punk rock pioneers of Bali, were born and bred in Kuta Rock City. The band is three chord attitude-heavy young men in their 20s, by name:

»
Bobby Kool (beer drinker, lead vocal, guitar, highly personable, as kool as ice
»
Eka Rock (beer drinker, laid back bass and backing vocal, warm smilin' Rock 'N Roll bandman)
»
Jrx (beer drinking Rock 'N Roll prince charming, drummer, hairwax junkie, his name is slang for "spikey hairdo" in Balinese)

The name 'Superman is Dead' started its' evolution from Stone Temple Pilot's "Superman Silvergun". The name moved on to "Superman is Dead" cause they like the idea that there's such thing as a perfect, invincible person out there.

SID actually stumbled together in '95, drawn by their common love of Green Day and NOFX. Their influences soon extended to the punk 'n roll genre a la Supersuckers, Living End and Social Distortion, and here they stay. Some of their better known tracks include, "My Girlfriend is Pregnant" (true story of the bassist), "Bali Holiday" (about the Balinese prostitution scene), "Long Way to the Bar" (self explanatory!), and so it goes on. They say what they wanna say, how they wanna say it. In your face, to say it precisely.

SID public image, self described, is "Blitzkrieg 3-Chordsabilly Beer Punk Rock" (think raw energy of Ramones vs Living end meets Supersuckers + Sid Vicious' nihilism .supersonically fueled with beer-soaked Rockabilly attitude.complicated, eh?!?!).

History? SID produced their first three albums independently (the boys worked years of crappy night jobs), with fabulous, small scale indie labels 1997 "Case 15", 1999 "Superman is Dead", 2002 "Bad, Bad, Bad"(mini album, 6 tracks). In March 2003 SID finally signed with Sony Music Indonesia after extended negotiations regarding their right to sing the majority of their tracks in English and have full artistic rights over their 'image'!! With that decision they single handedly became the first band from Bali to be invited to sign with a major recording label in Indonesia, the first band in their nation (to my knowledge) to be recording majority of songs in English, AND the first punk band in Indonesia to get the national exposure and promotion that working with a major label in a third world country provides. And so the history of Indonesian Punk Rock begins!

And as for the question that everyone wants to know.the infamous bomb in Bali happened about 75M from their home, hangout center, punkrock boutique, bar, tape shop and rehearsal studio that is also Jerinx' house, in the heart of Kuta. After panel beating back the rolling doors of the studio, and shifting a little debris, rehearsals continued as usual. Yeah, they saw a lot, it sucked big time, but its' not gonna stop em!

And where are they now? At the end of last year, one of the more respectable music mags here cited SID as "The Next Big Thing" for 2003. With the release of their newest (fourth) album, "Kuta Rock City", followed by major airplay nationally and in some countries overseas, coupled with the instant popularity of their newest filmclip (can you believe they were MTV Indonesian artists of the months in June!) SID suddenly find themselves touring continuously throughout Indonesia. Last week they were in four major Indonesian cities, on three islands, in 7 days! Sometimes playing for free at underground scene clubs, sometimes at street skate parties or alternative band festivals, at lots of universities, and even occasionally at "classy" venues who would have probably denied them entrance 12 months ago! Which means more beers for all.

Last month SID even got a mention in Time Asia. They remain proud, boys from the streets of Kuta with a love of punk rock, beers and a good time. Ready for whatever comes next, excited about the next gig

Seringai

Seriangi History

Early 2002, Jakarta, Indonesia. After a year disbanding his legendary hardcore outfit for 10 years, vocalist Arian13 [Puppen, Aparatmati] and old time friends, drummer Kemod [from Bandung thrash grinders, Aparatmati] and guitarist Ricky [from Jakarta's finest hardcore band, Stepforward] founded SERINGAI ['grin' in Indonesian]. Fueled by a desire to play a blend between Motorhead, Black Sabbath, hard rock & metal influences, they began to jam together after bassist Toan joined. SERINGAI was already in the habit of constantly writing songs, and playing small gigs in Jakarta and Bandung. Anthem songs like Alkohol [Alcohol] and Membakar Jakarta [Burning Jakarta], are the crowd's favorites. SERINGAI became more popular and the shows were beer-soaked and the sing along, slamdancing, stagediving never stops. Shortly thereafter, Toan left the band, and was replaced by Sammy. The band recorded 9 songs including a cover of Black Flag's Jealous Again, and released High Octane Rock EP in 2004 in tape format on their own label, Parau. Many shows in support of the tape, and without proper promotion they have sold about 12.000 copies of High Octane Rock EP. They even got offered to write songs for local movie soundtrack, teenage flick Catatan Akhir Sekolah and horror flick 12:00 AM. Their fanbase grows bigger, and named themselves 'serigala seringai' or, Seringai's wolfpack. In 2005, the CD version is released. Fortunately, the CD version was highly anticipated, and with different and exclusive artwork, it has sold 2000 copies in just 2 month. This time, the CD was distributed by Off The Records/Universal Music Indonesia. SERINGAI now is gearing up for their debut full length that is going to be released in 2007.
